waiting for universal pensions in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a city of immense wealth, but it is also a city where far too many residents – especially older residents – live in poverty. The people of Hong Kong have shown remarkable patience while the government refuses to implement a universal pension recommended long ago by their own consultant, University of Hong Kong professor Nelson Chow Wing-sun.

The Alliance for Universal Pension is calling on the incoming Chief Executive, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, to form a commission aimed at implementing a pension scheme for all.

They made the demand before the last Poverty Commission meeting of Leung Chun-ying government.
The group said it was upset that Leung failed to deliver on that part of his election manifesto.

A spokesman of the Alliance, Nicholas Chan, said the elderly can not waste another five years waiting for a pension, and a new government should move quickly on the idea.
