Hong Kong is a city of immense wealth, but it is also a city where far too many residents – especially older residents – live in poverty. The people of Hong Kong have shown remarkable patience while the government refuses to implement a universal pension recommended long ago by their own consultant, University of Hong Kong professor Nelson Chow Wing-sun.
The Alliance for Universal Pension is calling on the incoming Chief Executive, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, to form a commission aimed at implementing a pension scheme for all.
They made the demand before the last Poverty Commission meeting of Leung Chun-ying government.
The group said it was upset that Leung failed to deliver on that part of his election manifesto.A spokesman of the Alliance, Nicholas Chan, said the elderly can not waste another five years waiting for a pension, and a new government should move quickly on the idea.
